Liszt - Stabat mater, S172b (Thomson)
Liszt's sacred music is generally forgotten, but it exists as another great monument of Liszt's compositional scope. The date of the Stabat Mater is uncertain, but must postdate Liszt’s arrangements of the ‘Cujus animam’ from Rossini’s Stabat Mater, since it includes material from the introduction to that piece, as introduction and bridge passage in the present piece, which otherwise elaborates the Gregorian chant of this text, set in thirds, as it is in Christus and in the much later Via Crucis. The piano piece has nothing else in common with these later works, however, being in a more simple variation form rather akin to that of the Miserere in the Harmonies poétiques. A small charming piece, that sounds very programmatic.

Liszt - Song of the Shepherds at the Manger, S498b/1 (Kramer)
Переглядів 10 тис.3 роки тому
Liszt's own transcription of a movement from his Christus oratorio. This orchestral section may not represent the highest point of the whole oratorio-surely the Passion music does that-but it is nonetheless a particularly moving evocation of the shepherds and their pipes, with an almost Schubertian suspension of time to it. The shepherds’ pipes begin carolling in a regular 6/8 before the shephe...
Liszt - Préludes et Harmonies poétiques et religieuses, S171d (Kosyakov)
Переглядів 27 тис.3 роки тому
The history of Liszt’s Harmonies poétiques et religieuses is long and painfully complex; the eventual series of ten works (S173) was published by Kistner in 1853, having been finally revised and prepared by the end of 1851, but many of the pieces in that collection started life somewhat earlier and many pieces considered for it were outright discarded. Preceding the less incongruous S172a cycle...
Liszt - Weihnachtsbaum, S186 (Pöntinen)
Переглядів 53 тис.3 роки тому
The Christmas Tree suite is one of Liszt's most charming collection of pieces, combining arrangements with original thoughts and two musical portraits. It occupied Liszt for quite some time-he was determined to make an especially good job of it to present to his granddaughter Daniela (daughter of Hans von Bülow and Cosima) to whom the set is dedicated; naturally, the sadness of heart which perv...
Liszt - Tarentelle de Cui, S482 (Székely)
Переглядів 22 тис.3 роки тому
Liszt's enormous paraphrase on the orchestral Tarentelle by César Cui was one of his last fantastic flights of imagination, comparable with his reworking of Saint-Saëns’s Danse macabre. There is something remarkably Mephistophelean about the work, and the brief respite before the coda draws a parallel with the Waltzes.
Liszt - Die Zelle in Nonnenwerth, S534iii (Hastings)
Переглядів 14 тис.3 роки тому
A setting of text by Felix Lichnowsky, Liszt’s Die Zelle in Nonnenwerth (“The Cloister in Nonnenwerth”) was first composed in 1841 and published two years later. As Nonnenwerth was to be Liszt's and d'Agoult's last home together, it is of little surprise that this final piano version, composed around 1880, so clearly projects a mood of deep nostalgia while eliciting a sense of both tender remin...
Liszt - Dessauers Lieder, S485 (Tryon)
Переглядів 12 тис.3 роки тому
These 'songs without words', as they might be called, represent a great proportion of the many such transcriptions that Liszt made. Just as with Liszt’s operatic transcriptions, there is quite a range of style and approach, but the primary aim here seems to have been the proselytizing one-making the music available to a wider public. Josef Dessauer (1798-1876), according to John Warrack’s sympa...
Liszt - Mephisto Waltz No.3, S216 (Clidat)
Переглядів 60 тис.3 роки тому
Unlike the earlier Mephisto Waltzes, the Third possesses very few passages which are unmistakably linked with the episode from Lenau’s poem. General connections between the Waltzes do remain: the rapid triplet division of the beat, used to evoke a waltz of a truly demonic temper, along with the distinctive, attention-getting opening passage, which in this case is a remarkable satanic fanfare of...
Liszt - Ave Maria 'Die Glocken von Rom', S182 (Owens)
Переглядів 50 тис.3 роки тому
An obscure, very sensitive recording by Roger Owens of this short but moving work. Dated from 1862, the E major Ave Maria is not connected with any vocal work, and although the rhythm fits the opening of the text, the ecclesiastical connection remains general. The work unfolds with a five-note introduction which will return at the end, fully harmonized; at bar 41, low notes at the extreme range...
Liszt - Mephisto Waltz No.4, S216b (Andsnes)
Переглядів 159 тис.3 роки тому
The 4th Mephisto Waltz is a very interesting piece. Like the 3rd, it possesses far weaker ties to Lenau’s work when compared with the first two (although the demonic temper remains) and is almost entirely dependent on intriguing structural and tonal features (in particular a long delayed tonic arrival) for the source of compelling drama. Typical-of-late-Liszt thin, almost stark textures are mad...
Liszt: Two Episodes from Lenau's Faust
Переглядів 19 тис.3 роки тому
The Two Episodes from Lenau’s Faust are Liszt's response to Nikolaus Lenau's long poem in twenty-four episodes on the subject, specifically episodes 11 and 6. It is a bit strange that the companion piece to one of Liszt's most enduring works, the 1st Mephisto Waltz, never entered the concert repertoire (despite Liszt's repeated requests for "both the pieces to appear at once" and be published t...
Liszt - Marche funebre from Donizetti's Dom Sebastien, S402 (Wolfram)
Переглядів 25 тис.3 роки тому
This transcription, probably better described as a free re-creation, of the Marche funèbre from Donizetti's Dom Sébastien, was written in 1844 for Liszt's Iberian concert tour and published the next year with a dedication to the Queen of Portugal. The piece is more than double the length of Donizetti's-the result of extensive sequential repetition and variation of the original material (the mai...
Liszt - Ave maris stella, S34/1 (Hungarian State Chorus)
Переглядів 15 тис.4 роки тому
The abbé Liszt has always been a familiar figure. Less familiar is the fact that Liszt's preoccupation with religious thought goes right back to his teenage years in Paris-it is evident that Liszt's adolescence was lonely as there is not a single piece of evidence to suggest that the fifteen-year-old had any real friends his own age (his sole companion being his father) and this, in combination...
Liszt - Schlaflos! Frage und Antwort, S203 (Bonatta)
Переглядів 10 тис.4 роки тому
The title of Sleepless! Question and Answer, with its suggestion of insomniac uncertainty and subsequent resolution, finds its musical realization through clever thematic transformation (compare 0:00 with 1:05); Liszt's nocturne evokes a highly restless state when after the tonal clarity of the opening in E minor, chromatic melodic fragments unfold over a tonally inconclusive sonority of F-A-C-...

France Clidat ❤️❤️❤️❤️
I always found the metronome mark for O Heilige Nacht almost impossibly slow and was pleased to see the pianist here takes minim around 60 rather than the 48 in the score.
1:25 howl's moving castle anyone?
Vine a buscar oro y encontré diamantes
Having heard, studied and played the transcendentals in the final version, this version S137 is most refreshing and augers well for inclusion in the repertory, if pianists could play them? They would be inspiring to listeners...
It looks easy to play?
10:38 a fucking cannon
Best part of this astonishing performance 🎹 - no audience coughing 🙄
How many beautiful pieces did this guy write? I don’t get it. Liszt must have been blessed by God, or something
Never heard that before or heard of it. Not at all sure that I want to hear it again, certainly not one of Liszt’s better pieces and I am amazed that anyone would take the tremendous effort to learn and play it. With talent like that there is so much better music to perform.
❤❤❤
Freaking heck he needsto practive eith a metronome i many cases....one ofvworst performsces of this piece ....

This Early Operatic Fantasy (which was sadly cut by the publisher) has probably the most unique structure of his early virtuosi life and actually has the feeling of the opera. The introductory material is based highly on the sextet but in the diminished setting with the first 2 bars based of the start of the sextet and the other 2 bars being based on the middle section in 9/8. The second part of the fantasy (Marche et Cavatine) captures the essence of the dramatic scenes of the opera. Truly a marvellous work.

10:38 chasse-neige
6:05 One of the most beautiful melodies I've ever heard
This composition is out of human possibility...
Not composed for average pianists! 😅
EPIC
That became Nostalgic ❤
Andrei Cristian Anghel, wonderful video and channel. Thanks for sharing so much content of Liszt. I would like to ask you what makes you like Liszt so much?
Plz, come back
wow I quite enjoyed this one!
3:00 sounds like Liszt sonata
4:21 sounds like Liszt symphonic poem mazeppa
正直な所この様な初期スタイルはアルカンの方が面白く、良い仕上がりです

Salieri and Mozart hearing this: Grazie Signiore!
Œuvres belles mais inhumaines. Filipec est un héros! Merci de nous le faire découvrir!!
Shades of Prokoffiev in this.
This is the first time hearing this. Credit to Naxos for recording this piece and other pieces. Many artistes from Eastern Europe would have remained unknown if not for Naxos.

Boring no end. tatata..tata..tatata..tata....
It is not less difficult than the transcendental. Fantastic!
no 1 in a minor is my number 1 is my favourite indeed
no 5haunting never knew there was a 5
easier than mist of his works
never jeard of it sounds nice
7:37 this motif is from the cabaletta "I tuoi frequenti palpiti" Liszt also wrote a larger piece over this theme, "Divertissement sur "I tuoi frequenti palpiti" S.419"
Gunnar Johansen called this piece "a rousing affair" - I am sure that the much overrated Cziffra could not play this piece with such clarity, without his characteristic bombastic hammering, pounding of the keys and excessive use of the sustaining pedal when requirement of technique got the better of him, Clidat displays a purity of superior technique.
Y así Francisco Federico lloró, recordando a Federico Francisco, y yo lloro ahora, al terminar de oír esta maravilla.
Excellent sight read at a school concert. ❤
For an operatic paraphrase this contains surprisingly little material from the opera. If you want to hear what Liszt took from it you have to sit through 4 of 5 acts before we finally get to it.
Liszt is disappointed of him because he heard alot of mistakes and less or high pedal but we didn't hear
